Amba Alagi

(Redirected from Amba-Alagi)

Amba Alagi is a mountain located between the cities of Dessie and Mek'ele in modern-day Ethiopia.

History

The Battle of Amba-Alagi occurred in December 1895 . On December 7, the Abyssinians defeated an Italian army of 2,350 headed by Pietro Toselli and a day later, on December 8, the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II drove out the Italian general Baratieri . After the defeat, the Italians withdrew from Eritrea to Amba Alagi and Gondar.

On April 26, 1941, during World War II, the Italian fortress of Dessie located south of Amba Alagi was captured by South African forces. On May 17, it was besieged by British troops under General Cunningham and ultimately captured when the Italian garrison surrendered.

The film La Pattuglia dell'Amba Alagi , shot in 1953 by Flavio Calzavara , glorifies the Italian defense against the English.
