American Association of Retired Persons

AARP is the name of the United States non-profit organization formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons. AARP is an organization, based in the United States, dedicated to the interests of older persons (aged 50 and up). The organization is widely known for advancing the interests of aging populations through lobbying efforts at the state and national governmental level. They also negotiate reduced rates for members at various tourist attractions, automobile rental companies, motel and hotel chains, etc. They provide programs for reduced cost medical and automobile insurance. They inform their membership as to possible scams which take advantage of the elderly, such as predatory lending and refinancing. AARP also alerts members of opportunities for managing retirement.

It was founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus. It claims 35 million members, only half of whom are fully retired.
