Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk

Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk was born in 1908 and died in 1975.

He was the son of Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk who died in 1917 when the young Duke was only 9 years old. His Grace’s mother was Gwendoline Mary Herries, Baroness Herries from whom he inherited the title of Baron Herries of Terregles in 1947.

He married the Hon. Lavinia Mary Strutt, daughter of the 3rd Baron Belper in 1937.

His Grace had no male issue, his children being:

  • Lady Anne Elizabeth Fitzalan-Howard, Baroness Herries b 1938
  • Lady Mary Katherine Fitzalan-Howard, b.1940
  • Lady Sarah Margaret Fitzalan-Howard, b.1941
  • Lady Theresa Jane Fitzalan-Howard, b. 1945, Countess of Ancram

His ducal title passed to his cousin Miles Francis Stapleton Fitzalan-Howard, 17th Duke of Norfolk. The title of Herries is a Scottish title and could be, and was inherited by his oldest daughter, Anne Elizabeth, who married Baron Cowdrey of Tonbridge, better known as Colin Cowdrey, English cricketer.

The 16th Duke was Minister of Agriculture between 1941 and 1945.
