Your character's class is somewhat his job as opposed to his race. Some races might have a class they prefer like a gnome will often end up as an Illusionist. In Original Dungeons & Dragons for demi-humans, their race was their class; in later versions of the game, demi-humans were treated just like humans in that their race and their class were separate.
