Maruti 800 is the car that put India on the world car map. It is manufactured by Maruti Udyog Ltd. The car has been on the top selling list for the past two decades. It was the first car to be produced by Maruti. When it was launched, it was a tad different from the cars present at that time. Its record was broken only in 2004 when another car from Suzuki Alto sold more than it. But in the very next month, Maruti 800 reclaimed the top slot. The car is exported to many countries. It is seen in large numbers in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.
The car was a dream project of late Sanjay Gandhi. It is powered by a 800 cc, 3 cylinder motor. Small in size, it is very fun to drive and offers affordable motoring at an economical maintainence cost. The car is not safe but offers a resonable fuel economy. It has been modified 4 times till now. The latest model comes with an airconditioner and a stereo system as optional gadgets. Its predecessor is the more comfortable Maruti Zen.
