Miraflores District, Lima

Miraflores is an affluent district of Lima, Peru. It is known for its shopping areas, gardens, and flower-filled parks. It also has its beaches, part of the "Costa Verde" area, which draw thousands of beach-goers and surfers in summertime. Wind providing, paragliders launch from the coastal ridge for a ride between the sea and the tall buildings in the malecón.


The district is also a cultural center, with theaters, cinemas and art galleries, It also has a pre-Inca mud-brick temple called the Huaca Pucllana, one of a number of archaeological sites found in Lima. The district teems with cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops, and its parks and gardens attract thousands of Lima inhabitants every Sunday who congregate to visit art exhibitions, take in open-air concerts and visit flea markets. Larcomar, a shoping mall overlooking the Pacific coast, is located in Miraflores, and is very popular among tourists and people of the medium-to-upper-class socioeconomic levels.

The Calle de las Pizzas ("Pizza Street") in downtown Miraflores, a favourite among Lima's teenagers and young adults, has many pubs which every weekend are filled with people. Miraflores is also known as the "gay district" of Lima, having a large gay and lesbian population.

During the War of the Pacific, the district was the scenary of the Battle of Miraflores. Two thousand persons died and the district was sacked and burned by Chilean invaders.

The Universidad Científica del Sur is located in Miraflores.
