When Mitsubishi realized that its Lancer Evolution homologation cars were no longer able to effectively compete in the WRC class of the World Rally Championship, they replaced it with the Lancer/Carisma GT WRC car. The car however failed to capture the WRC title. Mitsubishi then decided to take one season off to reorganize a new WRC team and design a new car, the Lancer WRC04.
