Safari Rally

The Safari Rally is held in Kenya and is considered by many to be the world's toughest rally. It first started in 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari and was held from May 27th to June 1st of that year in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1973. In 1974 it became the Safari Rally as it was now to only run in Kenya. Since then its name has also included that of its sponsors (Marlboro Safari Rally, Trust Bank Safari Rally, Inmarsat Safari Rally... and others.)

The event has been a part of the World Rally Championship calendar for many years until recently. It has been excluded from the WRC due to lack of funding & organisation. The Kenyan Government is trying to get the rally back in the championship.

In 2003, 50th anniversary running of the East African Safari Rally took place.
