The Mirage is a hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip at 3400 Las Vegas Boulevard South in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was built by Mirage Resorts when that company was headed by Steve Wynn, and it is currently owned by the successor corporation, MGM Mirage. It opened in 1989. It has 2,763 guest rooms.
Wynn had previously acquired interests in various existing casinos, but the Mirage was the first project in which he was involved in the design and construction. It was considered a risky venture, by the standards then prevailing in Las Vegas, because of its high cost and emphasis on luxury. It proved to be enormously successful.
From 1990 through 2003, the Mirage was the venue for the Siegfried & Roy show. The two headliners combined magic and the use of wild animals. The closing of the popular attraction, after Roy Horn was attacked by one of the white tigers used in the show, was a major blow to the Mirage. Visitors can still see a white tiger habitat area with one of the animals always on view. Other notable features include Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, an artificial volcano along the Strip that "erupts" periodically during the evening (weather permitting), and a 20,000-gallon aquarium behind the front desk.
The Mirage is connected by a free tram to Treasure Island, its sister property immediately to the north.
