Article Licensing
Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...
- ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
- ...all articles...
using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.
- Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 17:57, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

Atheism
Subud
Pursuant to our discussion about Subud and atheism/agnosticism (see [1]), the Humanist Manifesto II, in part, says that:
--Authoritarian religion does a disservice to humanity;
--There isn't enough evidence for the supernatural;
--Nature is primary rather than God;
--God won't save us, we must save ourselves; and,
--Fear of Hell is harmful because it takes the focus away from life here and now.
Many folks in Subud would agree with this. My particular viewpoint goes along the lines of Process theology, which is directly in line with these statements and other statements like them. The problem with your point of view above is that you are arguing against an outdated version of theism (from as far back as the Middle ages). Some of these outdated ideas are that God is omnipotent and thus controls everything, that human beings have little or no power and God determines human destiny, that God is a personal entity and is supernatural, that classical or authoritarian religion is acceptable, that theism cannot solve the problem of evil, etc. None of these ideas (and a host of others, see, e.g., "Ominpotence and Other Theological Mistakes" by Charles Hartshorne) make much sense to a process theist, or to those (some of which are in Subud) who are open-minded theists.
Also, I'm not sure what you're saying about Subud being "obscure." Could you clarify this? Aliman 09:59, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Good afternoon, Duncharris. I noticed your VfD nomination on Royal Lao Government in Exile . In it, you mentioned the Arbitration Committee's decision on User:Jimmyvanthach. I was not aware they'd made a decision. We have had an old VfD discussion thread that has been waiting for a long time for that decision. Would you be familiar enough with the case to go to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Phan Lien and close out the discussion? Boxing Day
I changed the Boxing Day article, because it seems we're no longer calling the 26th Christmas Sunday and the 27th Boxing Day when Christmas Day is a Saturday. The last time it happened, in 1999, the Radio and TV Times, and indeed everyone I know, called the 26th Boxing Day, and the same is happening again this year. I've left the article as you put it back to for now, but the people on the Boxing Day discussion page seem to be of a similar view. Perhaps refer this for arbitration? Boxing Day
Ah, had it right. Boxing Day itself is always on the 26th - the day off work associated with it may move (just as if November 11th - or any other holiday on a fixed calendar day - is on a Sunday, people get the following Monday off) to the day following, but Boxing Day stays on the day after Christmas. You should revert your reversion... Noel (talk) 11:56, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Boxing Day
Thanks for the support, Noel. I've done the rv.
No offence meant, Dunc - I actually liked the custom of calling the 26th Christmas Sunday and the 27th Boxing Day when Christmas Day was a Saturday. Alas, the custom has fallen out of use. Everyone I've spoken to about their plans for Christmas this year calls the 26th Boxing Day; all the 'Christmas Opening Hours' signs at my local shops do likewise; as do the Radio and TV Times (who themselves started the 26th CS/27th BD practice back in 1954). In the face of such an overwhelming tide, it is futile for we purists to kick against the pricks. We have to bow to general usage. Sorry.Jess Cully 16:51, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
ukrailways.wikicities.com
I've started a new wiki at wikicities to concentrate on the history of railways in the UK. This will in time, hopefully, provide a space to greatly expand on what is available on wikipedia. For example, individual pages for locomotives, signal boxes and the like. I've picked on you as a likely contributor from looking at the edit history for the LMS and then at your personal edit history.
At the moment I am busy seeding the wiki with pages from wikipedia, with a few minor edits, before annoucing its existance to the wider railway world. I'm contacting a few people who seen to edit railway articles on wikipedia at first, as they are already enthusiastic about the wiki system. I would be interested in you views on how I can move it forward and the structure of the wiki. I'll keep an eye on this talk page, my talk page or you could email me at richard_bedwell@hotmail.com

Hi Duncharris: The article on Kents Hill School has been refactored and expanded, with additional work underway. Looks great Duncan, correct as far as I can remember the formulas without cracking a book. Need to read over it more carefully though. Only one thing, I would reorganize the sections so that the mathematics sections are confined to those sections specifically. i.e. you can talk about the concepts of Variations in population size non-mathematically (then mathematically define them later), ditto Hardy-Weinberg principle. Also, no need to preference everything with "In <discipline-name> foo is..." because the category system effectively does that for us, and in the case of Ne and HWP, it doesn't need to function as a disambiguation because HWP doesn't exist in any other discipline... ;-) Lexor|Talk 14:30, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)

Hi! As part of the Wiki Syntax cleanup effort, I came across a broken redirect from German Bight to Heligoland Bight, which you put up a few months ago. Such redirects are usually meant to be deleted, but there are two pages linking to it, and the redirect does seem to make sense (from what I gather from these articles). Could you possibly be persuaded to write a stub for Heligoland Bight? Thanks! --Fbriere 21:05, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Not to sound picky (though I probably will anyway), but are you sure this redirect is appropriate? From what I glanced from the article, Heligoland and Heligoland Bight are not the same thing, are they? The reason I'm asking is that we now end up with German Bight being a double redirect, which is a Bad Thing™. Sure, you could change its target, but that's going to mess things up if a real Heligoland Bight article were to be written.
- Of course, it's possible the two terms are the same, in which case you're welcome to adjust the redirect, call me an idiot, and get a free pizza for your trouble. :)
- --Fbriere 05:54, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Never mind; after a bit of googling, I managed to come up with a stub to replace the redirect. --Fbriere 18:19, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The IPU idea addresses an outdated notion of deity. Attributes such as "supernatural," "outside human perception," "great spiritual power" (these phrases were taken from the Wikipedia article on the IPU)and even "omnipotence" don't necessarily apply to deity or God. To claim that they do is a textbook example of the Straw Person fallacy (in fact, I use that example in class to demonstrate to my students an example of the SP fallacy).

I had been using White City as a quick link to World Columbian Exposition, and it took a bit of sluethwork to figure out why this wasn't working anymore. Hi, Duncharris. I was a little bit surprised to see the changes at Darwin you made a few days ago; I was wondering what your reasons for deleting the Darwin redirect to Charles Darwin and then moving Darwin, Northern Territory to Darwin. I recognize that Darwin, Northern Territory is a territory capital and is quite important; however, I believe that an unqualified "Darwin", to most people, would refer to the naturalist and that Darwin should therefore redirect to Charles Darwin. Or if not that, then the disambiguation page should be there, in my opinion. What do you think? (And please let me know if this was discussed somewhere that I overlooked). Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker দ 07:03, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Articles should refer to a person's full name, always Charles Darwin not just Darwin. The capital of an Australian territory is quite important. Dunc|☺ 09:17, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I agree, and I fully support leaving Charles Darwin at its current title. However, in my opinion, an unqualified "Darwin" usually refers to Darwin the scientist, not Darwin the city. I am not trying to belittle the capital's importance but I feel that the scientist is a far more common meaning for the name "Darwin" and so Darwin should redirect to Charles Darwin. I realize there is room for disagreement, although it might have been nice to bring this up on the talk page or WP:RM, since it is not an obvious change; especially since it was a complex revert and you had to delete the original Darwin page. I also would have left a note on the talk page explaining what you did so that others, especially nonadministrators who can't see the deletion history, would understand what happened. — Knowledge Seeker দ 04:18, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

On formatting images
Hello. You're mistaken about placing images on the page. The following tips from my Userpage will help you, I hope, while you might keep in mind Thoreau's remark, A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. Consistency is important within pages and among closely connected pages, but its only purpose is to serve the reader.
Not all Wikipedia pages need have identical formats, with the first illustration squared top right, though more than one Mediator is convinced this is a requirement. Some images are neutral in their format possibilities, others not:
- 1. Images need to face into the page.
- 2. Vanishing points need to lie on the page.
- 3. Sources of light in an image need to come from the center of the page.
Even if you have never thought about page layout, a moment's reflection will demonstrate the reasonableness of these three axioms, practiced by all professionals. --Wetman 04:49, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That title actually goes to the city in Pennsylvania, although, Lancaster, England is the original. Not to mention, that neither the English, or the Pennsylvania city is the largest of the Lancaster family. That title goes to the California city. So, Lancaster, England does not carry the same weight of a single title city such as London or Los Angeles. So, I reverted it back to the Lancaster, England page where it should be. I also placed boldened type to the 3 primary Lancasters to separate them from the others so that they would be more easily identifyable. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

And you seem biased to your own Lancaster. The point is, there are 3 cities worthy of the title. If neither San Jose can have it... neither can a particular Lancaster. Leave it the way it is or I will appeal to the administrators to have it protected. --Anon 00:11, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)
Note that Winchester is also liable to being moved back, as this has been discussed twice before on the talk page concluding that the main page should be the dab. Joe D (t) 13:08, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, sorry about that.
That wasn't intentional, just got lost in the copyedit.
